When the body reacts faster than the mind
For a long time I thought I just needed to change my thoughts.
Think more positively.
Think more calmly.
Think differently.
But my body reacted faster than I could think.
A sound.
Mission.
A glance.
And suddenly my pulse was racing.
My shoulders are tense.
My breathing is shallow.
Before my mind even understood what was happening.
The body doesn't err – it remembers.
I began to understand that my nervous system wasn't "overreacting".
It reacts.
Not just the moment alone,
but rather on stored experiences.
The body evaluates faster than the mind.
He doesn't ask:
"Is that logical?"
He asks:
"Is that safe?"
And if the answer is uncertain,
It triggers an alarm.
Why thinking alone is not enough
Many self-help books suggest that
You just need to restructure your thoughts.
This can be helpful –
but not if the body is already in stress mode.
An activated nervous system cannot be argued away.
One cannot "think positively",
when the body signals danger.
Only when the body has calmed down,
The mind can function clearly again.
This sequence was a turning point for me.
What has changed as a result
I listen to my body earlier these days.
Not all discomfort is irrational.
Not every reaction is exaggerated.
Sometimes it's simply a signal.
For me today, regulation does not mean
To suppress reactions.
But to understand,
why they arise.
And then to respond gently.
